5 Baby Items To Keep On Hand...
Without A Baby At Home

Before I had kids, friends would visit with their babies and I had nothing in the house to help with feedings and naps or offer them if they forgot anything.  It's not because I didn't want to buy children's things yet, I just didn't know what to get.

I'm not saying every home needs gates, outlet plugs, mountains of toys, cribs and the whole deal, I just wanted to know what the most useful things were to have in my home.

Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles or anyone who entertains friends with young children might consider having some things handy for little visitors.

It's also a good idea for moms with older children to hold on to a few baby things a bit longer to share.

Here are 5 inexpensive ideas.
  • Playpen:  Definatly the most useful and can be bought at a good price second hand.  Most moms are tethered to home at certain times because of naps.  Playpens are a safe way for newborns and toddlers to sleep away from home and they pack away nicely.  They are also a great way to keep little explorers contained in a unbabyproofed house.
  • Bumbo or Booster Seat:  A Bumbo is another great item to get used and the tray isn't needed.  They are great for feeding little ones and keeping babies happy.  Booster seats can replace a highchair at the kitchen table and they are not too big to store either.
  • Toys:  Tupperware, wooden spoons, and cardboard boxes can all be toys to a toddler, but if you wanted one or two actual toys, I'd go for balls or something with wheels.  You wont want anything with lots of pieces.
  • Night Light: A night light is very convenient illuminating a room where children are sleeping.  And they can also be useful in a washroom or hallway after the children leave.
  • Dishes & Utensils:  Keeping a couple of plastic cups with or without lids are a great idea for any child who walks through the door.  They hardly take up space in a cupboard, aren't expensive and likely prevent glass wreckage.  A couple of small spoons are convenient as well and will probably be used regularly even when the children go home.
